This report isn't an 'ethical shopping guide'. The way to help workers is not to boycott one company in favour of another, it's to shift from being a passive consumer to an active one. Each time you buy clothes, get in touch with the company you bought them from, ask them what they are doing about the recommendations in this report. Together, we can - and we will - clean up fashion.

i have been working at TK Maxx for nearly 7 months now. We have had 3 new bosses and they have cut our breaks down, for example: if I am doing a 9 hour shift or 10 hour shift I will only get an hour break. We used to get an hour and 2 15 mins, but we are only given an hour now. Is this Legal? And i am only 16, my contract is for 8 hours a week, but i do 16 hours a week and they say they can't change it. I feel personally bullied by the staff at TK Maxx.

I have worked at Tkmaxx for almost 5 years now and when I started the wages were quite competitive as the years have gone on however the wages have not kept up with other retailers. I enjoy my job but I don't see why I should start my shift 15 minutes early and leave late every single day because recovery is not done (this is a huge issue in our store). I am higher up than a basic associate yet am still on the same wage as everyone else and I cannot get the wage rise until I have done my ADP cards. However I have een asking about this since I have been in a higher poition and the response is we havent got the time or staff to do the cards.

So im taking on more work and responsibility and getting nothing in return. I personally think it is a joke. The ADP cards and Advanced associate cards are in place to reward people for working hard and being specifcially trained in their area. The company has set this up to motivate staff and to help the staff progress through the company. Which in my case I have and yet almost 6 months on not a whiff of any ADP cards or a pay rise.I cannot argue over this because the response is you cannot get a pay rise until the cards are complete. As if there is any intention of these actually being done.I am getting so frustrated with this now that I am applying for other jobs that pay a decent wage.

I work at a T.K. Maxx in the Midlands and I love it, they gave me a job when all the other stores in the area never even called me back despite constantly calling them - T.K. actually saved me so i could afford to buy presents for my parents and friends and go out etc (17yo Christmas temp) i'm on an eight-hour basic but i got/get loads of overtime because we could do with a couple more staff, but why should I moan at that? I just get more money!

My friends who work at M&S and Sainsburys etc got rubbish christmas hours, got barely any overtime, yet they had to work hard too.

Alright the work is hard but people should really get over it, a lot of people are scared of taking some pride in what they do, and just because you get put on the spot sometimes - god forbid you might have to think for yourself!

Life at T.K. Maxx is what you make of it, and the same goes for everywhere like that - if you have the initiative you need never get worried about messing up stuff on the tills, that's what the flm is there for! If you have to keep the cutomer waiting for it for a short amount of time, it isn't your fault, and you should realise that you probably aren't ever going to see them again so why should you care? Just be polite...

This job is my first and I've been kept on after christmas now as a genyouwine associate, and I swear to god it is just a little patience and a positive outlook that will get you through it.

Tbh, if you can;t handle life in a controlled environment like T.K Maxx, how the hell do you expect to ever take authority in a business, keep morale high amongst staff, manage people or get anywhere near the top of a proper multinational coroporation and earn the big bucks? Life isn't easy, it's a lot easier than it was when my parents had their first job for about ha'penny an hour as opposed to my £4.65, but people expect everything to be handed to them on a plate and have the work done for them without any inconveniences to them at all. Just take it as character building or something.

Sorry for that little rant, but get over your petty little foibles, that's my opinion, flame me or whatever, I dont care. I hope others out there can see what i'm trying to get at and agree.

smilies/grin.gifon't know about the ADP, havent experienced it so i wont comment, it might be the PITA that you make it out to be smilies/smiley.gif

TkMaxx Business Involvement Gr said:

Hi, Four years ago our Buisiness Involvement Group (BiG) was asked quite rightly by our associates to look into how our wage would be affected by the upcomming leap year. As members of one of the TkMaxx Distrabution Centers we get paid by the hour and for a fixed number of hours so on our wage slips we have a "Basic Rate" which is supposed to be a total of the hours we work and then it is split over twelve months. However after doing the basic math it seems we only got paid for 52 weeks of the year... not 52 weeks plus 1 day in a regular year and 52 weeks plus 2 days on a leap year (which works out at OVER £100 per full time associate)
When we brought this to the attention of our General Manager, Head of Finances and Human Resources Representative they without having to go away to check the figures themselves said that they are aware we dont recieve this additional pay but the DC does give additional days off during or after the Christmas period that covers this shortage in our wage. Following that meeting we had to go back to the Associates and explain. They wernt too happy but couldnt argue with the fact that they did indeed get am extra day (or days at leap year) at the christmas period...

That was until this year! This year we recieved no such extra days, and if our basic rate is anything to go by we have only been paid for 364 days even though our wage slip states an hourly rate and a number of hours we are contacted to each week. I am having a conversation with HR today about this because the fact is we are now in a leap year and if they are not going to componsate by giving additional holidays ( as we get our regular holidays in febuary before the extra day) they are going to have to cover two days pay for this year as our wages run from april 07 to april 08 (which would be after the extra day)

If anybody else knows anything more about this please post as we have over 500 employees over different shift working at ou DC and £100 per person is going uncliamed and into the companies back pocket.

  1) ADP is the associate development programe which if you want a pay rise is to be done mainly in your own time so if you dont want the money dont do it.

2)they put you on the spot straight way so see what you can do and you can alway ask for help and the phone speaker thing short, sweet dont be worried just shout if you have to or repeat it till they hear it.

3)changing the ticket is attempted theift so no police but they can still ban you and they dont need to take a photo they have you on cctv pictures which can then be fax to the other stores so just dont do it in the first place

4)on a basic 4 hour you get no break but due to store need you will be asked to do more and the law states a break every 4 hour so 5 hour would be 15 minutes 6 hour 30 minutes and so on.
all so beware and dont matter how many hour you are doing or when they can get you in any day any time in that week

There are still some concepts im confused by, like Shrink, and i thought i was supoosed to be on a four hour contract, well this week i have a six hour shift so i dont get that.   I have an issue with tk maxx and as you worked there I was wondering if you could give me some information. My situation is this: I changed the price tag on a pair of shoes, paid and got caught. They called the police but they didnt arrest me or gave me a caution. the shop didnt take my fingerprints or a picture of me.I did it because I saw those same shoes only a different size at another tk maxx store, in my experience when I asked a sales assisstant there they always pick up the most expensive item, so i thought nooo I ´ll change the tag for a similar price to the other store. Anyways, they banned me from the shop and the paper says i am not allowed to enter to any tk maxx shop. I always shopped there and spent lots of money and usually found really nice things so I want to keep buying of course not in that shop but perhaps in a different one. My questions for you are:

- Do they keep a list of the names of the banned people?

- If I go to another tk maxx shop will they know?

I work my ass off for a pittance a TK Maxx. Their training programme is unrealistic and we are not given time during working hours to complete our ADP. IF WE DON'T ACHIEVE THE LEVEL EXPECTED, WE DON'T GET A PAY RISE!
