This report isn't an 'ethical shopping guide'. The way to help workers is not to boycott one company in favour of another, it's to shift from being a passive consumer to an active one. Each time you buy clothes, get in touch with the company you bought them from, ask them what they are doing about the recommendations in this report. Together, we can - and we will - clean up fashion.

M&S has lines of garments made from "organic cotton", however, is 5% organic cotton in the apparel sufficient? I think apparel with atleast 50% organic cotton should qualify to be really made from "organic cotton".

M&S Suppliers of apparels are etting squeezed between Fair trade raw material (cotton, yarn & fabric) supplier and M&S. While cost of prod'n has increased due to expensive fair trade material, M&S refuses to absorb higher post by paying commensurate prices. This might lead to cost cutting on labor welfare programs.

For the fairtrade "brand" it's understandably important to concentrate on conditions in the supply chain. But for Active Consumerism to mean what you say, it's important to consider information on other areas of corporate conduct. M&S' corporate mission includes active economic support for the state of Israel (see their recent statements). Given the devastating effect of Israeli government policy on the Palestinian population, active support for this regime amounts to an unethical business model. Surely Active Consumers should apply pressure for this to cease.

They have a few lines of products made with fairtrade cotton, but most of their products aren't, and anyway the fairtrade mark only covers the cotton production, not the manufacturing. See here for more information:
